A Letter From the Kabbalist Rabbi Naftali Hertz HaLevi, Av Beis Din of Yaffo, to Rabbi Shmuel Salant – Jaffa, 1897

A long and pleasant letter with a question in the halachos of Gittin, written and signed by the tzaddik Rabbi Naftali Hertz HaLevi, Av Beis Din of Yaffo, to Rabbi Shmuel of Salant, legendary Rav of Yerushalayim and one of the leading Rabbanim of Eretz Yisrael at that time.

Interestingly, the messenger who delivered the letter from Yaffo to Yerushalayim was referred to as "an American from Chicago".

Rabbi Naftali Hertz (1853-1902) was considered one of the first Rabbanim of the new yishuv. With wisdom and righteousness, he drew the people close while still strictly keeping to halacha. He was extensively involved in establishing the halachos of Shemitah and mitzvos relating to Eretz Yisrael. He even permitted the "Heter Mechirah" in a certain manner, according to the opinion of his Rav, the Maharil Diskin and Rabbi Shmuel Salant.

"A great tzaddik and gaon in the hidden and revealed Torah and in mussar…" (The Maggid Rabbi B.Z. Yadler).
