Chamishah Chumshei Torah with the Commentary Devek Tov

Wide Margins!
Amsterdam, 1749

Chamishah Chumshei Torah with Targum Onkelos and Rashi’s commentary, and Haftaros with Radak’s commentary.

The commentary ‘Devek Tov’ is printed at the bottom of each page. It is a commentary on Rashi’s words by the Gaon
Rabbi Shimon Aushenburg, a scholar in Frankfurt in the 16th century and a contemporary of the Maharal of Prague and the Levush.

Beautiful copy with especially wide white margins!

At the beginning of the sefer are two title pages, the first made with a beautiful woodcut engraving. This title page is smaller than the rest of the sefer’s pages and was mounted on paper with wide margins.

Amsterdam, 1749. Condition: Good, some stains. First title page smaller, as mentioned above. Fine antique leather binding (with remnants of clasps).

The commentary ‘Devek Tov’ was, in its time, quite a popular commentary. It was first printed by the author himself in Venice, in 1588, while he was on his way to Eretz Yisrael. In the 30 years that followed, until 1618, the sefer was printed four more times!

In these five editions, only the commentary was printed, without the Chumash. Here the commentary is printed with the Chumash. (The Chumash was first printed with the commentary in 1735, by the same printer).
