Explanations on Rashi, Attributed to Rav Nosson Shapira of Horodna, Venice 5353 – [1593]
with a Map of Eretz Yisrael
Sefer Biurim commentary on Rashi al haTorah.
In the sefer is a map of Eretz Yisrael, one of the earliest printed maps of Eretz Yisrael. The depiction of the Menorah is on a full page. Illustrations show how the Spies carried the cluster of grapes, and the shape of Yaakov’s ladder according to Kabbalah.
The title page states this work was written by Rav Nosson Shapira (grandfather of the Megaleh Amukos), one of the leading Rabbanim in the 17th century. But Rav Nosson’s son, Rav Yitzchak, writes this is a forgery and that it was not written by his father. As a result, the heads of the Vaad Arba Aratzos issued a severe ban against selling the sefer.
However, some claim the main part of the sefer is indeed by Rav Nosson Shapira, and it was probably written by one of his students.
