Nachalas Shivah is the fundamental source for the halachos pertaining to writing kesubos, gittin and shtaros. It was accepted universally by all Poskim throughout the generations, and it is the primary resource used by every scribe charged with writing halachic deeds.
Rabbi Shmuel Halevi Segal (1626-1681), Av Beis Din of Bomberg, was a disciple of the Taz and Rabbi Sheftel Horowitz, whom he quotes extensively in his sefer. In 1648, he fled the Chmielnicki massacres in Poland to Germany where he was appointed Rav of several communities, most notably among them Bomberg.
The top of the title page features the owner’s signature:
“I purchased this sefer Nachalas Shivah…Meir son of…Moreinu Harav Yonah Nachum Cohen shlit”a.” Rabbi Yonah Nachum Cohen Katz was Av Beis Din of Sochatchov,
a brother of the Shach and son-in-law of Rabbi Shmuel Kaidanover, author of Birkas Hazevach. His son, the above Rabbi Meir whose signature appears on the title page, was the namesake of his grandfather, Rabbi Meir father of the Shach. He was of distinguished lineage, as a nephew of the Shach, grandson of the Birkas Hazevach, and cousin of the Kav Hayashar.
