Letter of Approbation, Handwritten and Signed by Rav Yaakov Zvi Mecklenburg, author of Haksav V’Hakabbalah. Königsberg, 5617 [1857]

Handwritten and autographed letter by Rav Yaakov Zvi Mecklenburg, Rav of Königsberg and author of the famous commentary on the Torah Haksav V’Hakabbalah. The letter, written on behalf of a student, praises the latter effusively and requests that the recipient “find him a peaceful place to sit in the tent of Torah and remove all concerns from upon him.”

Rav Yaakov Zvi Mecklenburg (1785-1865) was the talmid of Rav Akiva Eiger and author of Haksav V’Hakabbalah. As one of the greatest Rabbis in Germany and commentators on the Chumash, he was the first in his era to decry commentators who regarded themselves as enlightened scholars and exhibited disregard and contempt of the holy words of the Sages.

Rabbi Yaakov Tzvi authored his magnum opus Haksav V’Hakabbalh to demonstrate that the words of the Written Torah and Oral Torah “correspond, and that they are both true together.” Together with the Malbim, he waged all-out war against the Reform Rabbinical Conference in Braunschweig in 1844.
