Maalos Hamiddos,  Cremona, 1556

The famed safer Maalos Hamiddos by Rabbi Yechiel min Haanavim is divided into 24 attributes including fear of heaven, humility, faith, charity, et al.

Maalos Hamiddos is a work referenced in dozens of old Hebrew manuscripts. It is cited both by the Shl”a Hakadosh and Yaabetz, who praises it effusively (see Biras Migdal Oz, Beis Hamiddos, Aliyas Ha’ahavah Ch. 8).

The present sefer is the corrected version which was amended from the original edition Beis Hamiddos (Constantinople 1512). All later editions of Maalos Hamiddos (including recent ones) are based on the present edition.

Rabbeinu Yechiel ben Rabbi Yekuisel min Ha’anavim was a Rosh Yeshivah in Rome during the era of the Rishonim who is often called after the name of his sefer Maalos Hamiddos. He was a scion of the legendary Jewish-Italian Anav family, which according to Italian-Jewish lore, were one of four families that voyaged from Jerusalem to Italy in the era of Emperor Titus and originally settled in Rome. He is most famous for his two primary works, the present mussar sefer Maalos Hamiddos and Hatanya which addresses assorted topics in halachah.
