Fundamentals of Faith: Or Amim by Rabbi Ovadia Sforno
First Edition. Bologna, 1537
A work on matters of faith and philosophy intended to refute the views of the philosopher Aristotle that contradict the Torah’s view and principles of faith, by the sage Rabbi Ovadia Sforno.
A rare printing in Bologna where less than twenty Hebrew sefarim were printed!
In his introduction, Rabbi Ovadia Sforno writes that Aristotle’s words were accepted and took root as if undisputed, and therefore he comes to challenge his system and views.
Rabbi Ovadia Sforno saw great importance in his present work; he brought it to print and even prepared a list of errata on the last leaf himself. He also translated it into Latin and sent it to King Henry II of France who was fond of holy writings.
The sage Rabbi Ovadia Sforno (1478-1550) was among the greatest commentators on the Torah, great in Torah and knowledgeable in sciences. He was also a great physician and was known in his generation as the ‘mighty one of physicians’. His commentary on the Torah was very well received throughout all Jewish communities.
