Jewish Philosophy

Neve Shalom, Venice, 1574

Beautiful copy in ornate antique binding!

Neve Shalom is a deep philosophical work by the great Spanish sage Rabbi Avraham Shalom who lived in the era of the Spanish Expulsion.

In this sefer, the author addresses deep philosophical questions and discussions relating to topics of Jewish faith, kabbalah, science and their interrelation. His writings cite sages of prior generations, and specifically the Rambam whose works he greatly admired (see Essay 3 at the end of Ch. 2).

This is a beautiful sefer encased in a beautiful, very old binding adorned with clasps and ornate engravings. It was printed by Zuan di Gara in “Bonbergi type”, the attractive type used by the famed Venetian printer Daniel Bomberg.

Venice, 1574. Second Edition.

Page Count; [4], 128, 131-193. [1], 193-208, 211-215, [15] leaves.
Condition: Good. Beautiful copy with several stains.

The title page features a very old signature in old Ashkenazic script beside the printing date: Rabbi Shlomo ben Todros Yosef Shapira, who was one of the great Rabbanim in Frankfurt in the era of the Maharshal whose autograph appears in a letter signed by the city’s Rabbanim in the year 1565 (see Rabbanei Frankfurt p. 320). The proximity of his autograph to the date reveals that this sefer, which was widely acclaimed and in great demand, was purchased shortly after it was printed and disseminated.
