Sefer Yesod:
Urim Vetumim by Rabbi Yehonasan Eibschitz
First Edition Karlsruhe, 1775
Both volumes of the acclaimed sefer “Tumim” which encompasses a comprehensive, foundational commentary on the laws of Choshen Mishpat (Ch. 1-152) by “the Rebbe Rebbi Yehonasan Eibschitz”, Av Beis Din of Metz.
Since its original printing exactly 250 years ago, there has hardly been a Torah scholar or halachic composition that did not reference the words of Rabbi Yehonasan Eibschitz in his beloved “Tumim”, which discusses the most complex and intricate sugyos in Choshen Mishpat!
Rabbi Aryeh Leib Heller, author of the Ketzos Hachoshen, which was printed some ten years later, expressed that after learning the Tumim, he reexamined his sefer Ketzos Hachoshen and erased all sections and paragraphs that referenced the topics discussed in the Tumim!
The sefer is designed with the text of the Shulchan Aruch in the center of the page; the Urim commentary which presents a brief explanation that illuminates the words of the Shulchan Aruch on the inner side of the page; and on the external side, the longer Tumim commentary which supplement and illuminate the words of the Shulchan Aruch.
Rabbi Yehonasan Eibschitz (circa 1694-1794), renowned by the title “the Rebbe Rabbi Yehonasan Eibschitz”, was the noted author of the foundational sefarim Urim Vetumim and Yaaros Dvash. He was venerated for his genius, piety and sanctity, and his name was mentioned with awe by all Gedolei Yisrael. The Yismach Moshe remarked that had Rav Yehonasan dwelled in the era of the Rambam and Rashba, his genius and sanctity would have rivaled theirs (Chayei Yehonasan #25), and Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik of Komarno inscribed in the name of his rebbi, Rabbi Tzvi Hersh of Zidichtov “Who can express the genius and strength of the man of G-d, Rabbeinu Yehonasan who was privileged to glimpse Eliyahu [Hanavi], and if only I were as dust to his feet…” (Nesiv Mitzvosecha, Shvil Ha’emunah Ch. 6)
