One of the Foremost Sifrei Mussar: Sefer HaYashar Attributed to Rabbeinu Tam.

Shapira Press.
Zhytomyr, 1847

Ethical admonitions, matters of repentance, fear, and abstinence, attributed to Rabbeinu Tam.

It was printed in the famous printing house of the grandchildren of the Rav of Slativa, Rabbi Moshe Shapira. It was one of the first sefarim printed by Family Shapira in Zhytomyr. Their printing house was established there in 1847.

Sefer HaYashar gained much popularity among Jews everywhere and was printed in numerous editions. Already during the time of the Rishonim, Rabbeinu Yehuda son of the Rosh wrote: "Accustom yourselves to study the sefer Chovos Halevavos and Sefer HaYashar." (Last will and testament of Rabbi Yehuda ben HaRosh, Pressburg 1885, p. 11).

The sefer was mistakenly attributed to Rabbeinu Tam, from the Ba’alei HaTosafos, due to his halachic work titled Sefer HaYashar.

Rabbi Avraham Saba writes in his sefer Tzror HaMor Parshas Netzavim: "It is said that it was authored by Rabbeinu Tam" yet Rabbi Menachem di Lunzano writes that its author is Rabbi Zarchia HaYevani, and the Chida tended to accept his opinion. (See Shem HaGedolim, entry Rabbi Zarchia HaYevani).
