The author, Rabbi Shlomo ben Yitzchak HaLevi [circa 1532-1600], was one of the great rabbis of Saloniki in the 16th century. He was a distinguished student of Rabbi Yosef ben Lev (Maharival) and a friend of Maharsdam. He was known as a prolific author and a gifted Darshan, and even in his youth, he sent a question demonstrating great erudition to Maran the ‘Beit Yosef’ (Responsa Avkat Rochel, section 210). His son-in-law was the Gaon Rabbi Aharon Sasson, author of Torat Emet. Of his many works, the following were printed: Lev Avot, Divrei Shlomo (Venice 1596), Lechem Shlomo (Venice 1597), Cheshek Shlomo (Saloniki 1600).
