A handwritten letter by the tzaddik Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Sofer, Av Beis Din of Tet, to his uncle Rabbi Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, Av Beis Din of Dratschke.

Written on postcard, this is a personal letter centering on family matters, in the course of which Rabbi Avraham Yaakov notifies his uncle of his grandmother’s trip to Pressburg at the urging of her family and her safe return to Paks via Yemring. The said grandmother was the daughter of Rabbi Yoel Tzvi Unger, author of Shu”t Riv”a, wife of the Yalkut Eliezer and Rabbi Shmuel Binyamin’s mother. The second half of the letter presents beautiful divrei Torah.

The letter was sent to Rabbi Shmuel Binyamin Sofer who, at the time, was dwelling in Zenta near his father-in-law.

Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Sofer Hy”d (1878-1944), was the eldest grandson of the Yalkut Eliezer. He was orphaned of his father at an early age and raised primarily by his grandfather who imbued him with Torah and sterling character traits. He later studied under the Shevet Sofer in Pressburg. Rabbi Avraham Yaakov perished al kiddush Hashem in the fires of Auschwitz. Remnants of his extensive novellae were published in Zichron Efraim and Shu”t Mutzal Me’esh Hashalem. He likewise authored a history of his grandfather the Yalkut Eliezer and his family in a book entitled Mishpachas Sofrim.
