Tzena U’re’ena. Shapira Press. Zhitomir, 1865

Commentary and anthology of Midrashim and stories in Yiddish on the Chamishah Chumshei Torah, Haftaros and Five Megillos by Rabbi Yaakov ben Rabbi Yitzchak Ashkenazi of Yanov. This sefer was written specifically for “the women and daughters of Israel.”

The present edition was printed by the righteous printers, Rabbi Chanina Lipa and Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel Shapira, grandsons of the legendary Slavita Rabbi.

The Tzena U’re’ena is the most popular disseminated work in the history of Yiddish literature. Due to the immense popularity and extensive use of this sefer throughout the ages, it is rare to find complete copies in decent condition. Yet the present copy, which was printed by the Shapira Press in Zhitomir and was one of the most popular editions at the time, remains in good condition.

Zhitomir, 1865. 444 sides, complete with nekudos. Page size: 26.5 cm. Minor water stains. Last leaves slightly scorched at margins by a candle and with several holes. Attractive new leather binding.
