A letter in Ketav-Yad by the Lev Simcha of Gur. Arosa, Switzerland

“I am doubtful that I will be able to attend my brother shlit”a’s simchah, and I ask you to present 3 bottles of fine wine on the day of their festivities, and I shall pay you when we meet iy"H.”

Postcard handwritten and autographed by the Admor Rabbi Simcha Bunim Alter of Gur, author of the Lev Simcha, while vacationing in the resort town of Arosa, Switzerland.

The
Admor Rabbi Simcha Bunim Alter of Gur (1898-1992), renowned as the Lev Simcha after his sefer, was named at the behest of his grandfather the Sfas Emes who instructed his father to name him after Rabbi Simcha Bunim of Peschischa. Following the petira of his brother the Beis Yisrael in 1977, the Lev Simcha reluctantly assumed leadership of the Gerrer Chassidus Throughout his life, the Lev Simcha conducted himself with extraordinary piety and modesty, concealing his greatness in Torah and righteousness from the eyes of the masses. Throughout his tenure as Admor, he led his flock of chassidim faithfully and instituted many important Takanot to benefit the Chassidus.

This letter was sent to the Lev Simcha’s relative Rabbi Lipman Alter (1913-1998), son of Rabbi Moshe ben Rabbi Shlomo ben Rabbi Avraham Mordechai, son of the Chiddushei Harim.

Postcard of pastoral scenery of the resort town of a snow-coated Arosa.
