Sephardic Machzor for the High Holy Days – Amsterdam, 1689
A Magnificent Copy in Original Ornate Leather Binding
This machzor, designed for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with the order of Selichot for Yemei Harachamim Vehaselichot, is a splendid example of early Jewish printing.
Description:
* Condition: Excellent, in good condition.
* Binding: Original Amsterdam red leather binding, richly decorated with numerous gold embossments on both sides of the cover and on the spine, with gilded page edges and original iron clasps.
*Content: Two title pages. The first title page features a full copperplate engraving depicting the Mishca with the Mahane Israel surrounding the Kohen Gadol offering incense in the Kodesh Hakodashim in Yom Kippur.

Printer’s Background: Yosef Atiyah (circa 1635 – 1700) was born in Spain and eventually settled in Amsterdam via Portugal and Germany. His father, Jorge Mendes de Castro, was burned alive at an auto-da-fé in Córdoba in 1665. At the age of 23, in 1658, Atiyah established a Hebrew printing press that continued to operate until the 18th century. He was the first Jewish printer admitted to the Amsterdam Society of Book Printers in 1661.
