Maseches Chulin, Magnificent Printing on Blue Paper!!
Amsterdam, 1728
Gemara Maseches Chulin in small format, with commentaries of Rashi and Tosfos on the page, and commentary of Rosh at the end.
The Gemara was beautifully produced, featuring premium-quality blue paper!
Such rare and special copies were printed in extremely limited quantities, if at all, and were intended as gifts for wealthy patrons who funded the printing or for affluent individuals who specially commissioned them for a substantial sum.
We do not know of another copy of the Gemara from this edition printed on blue paper.
The masechta was printed independently (and not as part of Shas), in a small format; every two pages in this edition equal one page in the regular format editions.
Rare edition. The National Library has only a single copy, on regular paper, that arrived in recent years.
Amsterdam, 1728. Printed by Rabbi Moshe Frankfurt, author of ‘Be’er Heitev’ on Shulchan Aruch Choshen Mishpat.
Page Count: [282], 66 leaves.
Size: Approx. 21 cm.
Condition: Good, some stains. Hole throughout most leaves. Restored antique leather binding, new spine.
Distinguished Copy: The title page features the stamp of the ancient kloiz (Beis Medrash) of the renowned parnas (community leader) Rabbi Yechiel Wallach, in Hamburg (d. 1789). A story is told about Rabbi Yechiel that one Shabbos he learned of a Jew who was in mortal danger, and after receiving permission from Rabbi Raphael HaKohen, Av Beis Din of Ah”u (Altona, Hamburg and Wansbeck) to desecrate Shabbos, he immediately took his animal and rode for about 30 hours, almost without food or drink, in order to save him (see Chachmei Ahu p. 84).
Ownership inscriptions on the flyleaves, including Rabbi Hirtz Scheuer,
Av Beis Din of Mainz.
